One of the journalists caught up in the Azimio la Umoja demonstrations recounted their lucky escape from a mob of protesters who attacked them on Monday, March 27, in Kibra while covering the mass action.

The journalists, who were drawn from Nation Media Group's NTV, stated that an angry mob began pelting them with stones as the protest reached a crescendo.

The scribes who included Vincent Oduor, Ibrahim Karanja and their Videography crew, came under a heavy barrage of stones from protesters who demanded that they vacate the scene of action.

"Protesters accused the media of taking pictures and submitting them to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for future arrests," Oduor noted.

The matter was further complicated for the journalists when police officers also, reportedly, beat them up for taking pictures of a confrontation between the police and the protesters.

The media crew, as a result, escaped into their van for safety.

In the mix of confrontations between police and protesters, Oduor was left behind after the NTV van sped off leaving him in the hands of the protesters.

Oduor had to resort to his mother tongue after he was cornered by the protesters who were baying for his blood.

"Even though, I did not know so much of my mother tongue, I had to try as much as I could, and it worked," Oduor explained.

Luckily for Oduor, a number of the protesters shared the same native language and soon, their rage turned into a caveat of protection when the demonstrators discovered that he meant no harm.

Under the protection of protesters, Oduor was escorted to safety where he was accorded respect and assisted to trace back his colleagues.

"The protesters also attacked Citizen TV Press Corps and dismantled their equipment some of which were stolen," Oduor explained.
