Raila Maintains Monday Protests Will Continue as Planned

The second week of Azimio la Umoja's mass demonstrations kicked off on Monday, March 27, as the opposition side sought to present its petition to President William Ruto over the high cost of living affecting Kenyan citizens.

Heavy police officers were deployed at strategic points along the Central Business District (CBD) as well as areas where demonstrations occurred the previous week. 

Azimio's Raila maintained that the planned demonstrations would continue despite the tough warning from Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome who affirmed that the demos were illegal.

5:50 pm: Attempts by Raila's procession to access the CBD from Kibra were repulsed by police. The motorcade made its way to Lang'ata Road. 

5:20 pm: Raila condemned the acts by intruders who invaded Kenyatta's Northlands City and East Africa Spectre. He termed the incidents as vile acts that should be treated with contempt.  

5:03 pm: One person was shot dead and several others left nursing injuries in Kisumu as anti-riot police officers engaged in running battles with the crowd.

The deceased’s body was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.

4:24 pm: Raila's motorcade made its way through Kibra, whereby he addressed the residents. The ODM leader hailed the crowd for showing support for the cause to lower the cost of living. 

3:28 pm: The procession proceeded from Kawangware to Ngong Road whereby police continued to lob teargas at the Azimio brigade. 

02:57 pm: Two protestors sustain gunshot injuries as police shoot in the air to disperse angry demonstrators. The two were taken to Rongo Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

One had an exit wound while the other had a bullet lodged in his leg while the other, a bullet had exited.

2:34 pm: Police deploy a water canon to repel protesters pelting stones in Kawangware. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's convoy was blocked from proceeding.

2:08 pm: Police officers lob teargas on Raila's convoy in Kawangware, Nairobi, to disperse the protestors. 

1:33 pm: Azimio's Raila leaves Lavington, Nairobi while heading to Kawangware among other stops. Flanked by Azimio principals including Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, the convoy made its way through the streets with their supporters in tow. 

1:05 pm: Two journalists, Calvin Rock and Clint Obere, attached to Africa Uncensored freed by the police after intervention by John Allan Namu and Hassan Mugambi.

12:21 pm: John-Allan Namu reveals that two journalists from Africa Uncensored, a media house he runs, were arrested while covering protests in Mathare.

"Our Africa Uncensored journalists, Calvin Rock and Clint Obere, have been arrested by police while covering protests in Mathare. We aren't sure where they are being taken at the moment. This is uncalled for, an affront to our freedom to do our jobs. They need to be released now," he demanded.

11:23 am: NTV Reporter, Brian Obuya was forced to take cover as protesters in Mathare pelt stones at police officers blocking their way to Nairobi CBD. 

11:15 am: Azimio supporters block the road in Mathare, Nairobi engage in running battles with police officers. 

11:02 am: Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o and his Deputy Mathew Owili lead peaceful demonstrations along the streets. 

10:56 am: A protestor walks past police officers at the Kisumu Boys School roundabout with his three-year-old son. They were both draped in towels and carried a banner written: "Azimio. Say no to high cost of living".

10:25 am: A contingent of police officers disperse Azimio protesters near Moi Air Base. 

10:14 am: In Kibra, protestors lit tyres on fire at the centre of the road as they marched towards CBD.

10:00 am: A group of Azimio supporters assembles in Kibra, Nairobi as they begin chanting and marching towards CBD. 

09:37 am: Protestors close roads in Migori County, including the Migori-Isbania Road, as the Azimio protests gather steam countrywide. The protestors also chanted slogans in the local Dholuo mother tongue.

8:20 am: Police barricades were placed along Processional Way leading to State House and Waiyaki Way. Police officers were also spotted in Kibra and Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).

8:07 am: Anti-riot police and water cannon trucks were captured along Juja road.

7:58 am: The anti-riot police block access to State House by installing a roadblock on Processional Way. 

Police trucks were deployed along the Kamukunji area as officers were stationed at strategic points. 

7:45 am: Police in body armour and batons take up positions outside the National Archives and Kencom in the CBD

7:25 am: Azimio's Raila maintained that the mass demonstrations slated for Mondays and Thursdays would continue as scheduled. 

"Maandamano Mondays and Thursdays remain on as scheduled. Let the work begin," Raila stated. 

7:23 am: Transport was paralysed as there was a minimal number of matatu Saccos at various stages along CBD. 

7:10 am: There were little activities at Raila's home in Karen, Nairobi, as a few cars were captured approaching the barricade. The Media was not allowed past the roadblock mounted a few metres from the former prime minister's gate.
