A Range Rover Classic was reportedly the first car issued with the Second Generation number plate in 1989.

After the First Generation was phased out, the car was assigned KAA 001A number plate series. The First Generation plates series ended with KZZ 999.

Before National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took over the mandate, the First Generation number plates were assigned to each region.

Mombasa received the earliest registration, KAA 00A, in 1938, while Nairobi came second with KB, followed by Nakuru with KC, Kisumu with KD and Nanyuki with KE.

The First Generation plates were black with silver lettering for the front, but the Second Generation adopted a reflective yellow and white in black lettering system, with a Range Rover Classic being the first car to be given the plate.

In 2007, the Second Generation series ended with KAZ 999Z.

Features of Range Rover Classic

Range Rover Classic, pictured on various highways in Nairobi with KAA 001A number plate series, was produced between 1969 to 1996.

The car was a mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV) initially made by a division of the British Leyland company.

It was fitted with a 3.9-litre engine with a manual gearbox.

Range Rover Classic had a long-wheel-base (LWB) version that added more legroom for the rear seat passengers.

It had a top speed of around 160 kilometres per hour, a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and hydraulic disc brakes on all wheels.

Range Rover Classic had a groundbreaking four-speed dual range and a permanent four-wheel drive system.

Off-road performance was good, owing to its long suspension and high ground clearance.

Reports indicated that the car was initially designed for construction foremen, but its improvements made it relevant for other professionals to buy the SUV.

Its bodywork skin was constructed from lightweight aluminium, allowing it to have greater structural strength.

However, the owner of Range Rover Classic KAA 001A is not publicly known.
