Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji on Tuesday, March 28, directed Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to investigate cases of theft, vandalism and arson among other crimes reported during both Monday, March 20, and Monday, March 27, Azimio la Umoja protests.
In a statement addressed to the IG, the DPP raised concerns about the delay by the police to arrest the financiers and masterminds behind the acts.
He noted that the police had only arrested a few suspects caught engaging in the aforementioned acts while little was known about the real culprits enabling their action.
As such, the DPP issued a 14-day ultimatum to the National Police Service (NPS) to ensure that the orchestrators are identified and their names forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
"Whereas some suspects have been arrested and charged in court for various offences, we have noted that the persons culpable for planning, inciting, instigating, and/or financing the commission of the aforementioned offences have not been investigated.
"You are hereby directed to undertake comprehensive investigations into the aforementioned offences and all persons responsible for planning, inciting, instigating, and/or financing the commission of any offence and submit the investigation file within fourteen (14) days of the date hereof," the statement read in part.
In addition, the DPP warned members of the public against using social media platforms to incite or advance ethnic-based contempt.
He affirmed that his office would deal firmly with contraventions of the National Cohesion and Integration Act, of 2008 and the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, of 2018 which prohibit the use of communication platforms to cause tension.
"The ODPP reaffirms its commitment to uphold the rule of law and respect for human rights in the discharge of its mandate, and any person found culpable for the commission of any offence shall be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," he added.
Earlier in the day, IG Koome issued a report of the events that transpired on Monday, March 27. The IG stated that investigations were underway to establish the culprits behind, among other acts, the invasion of the Northlands Farm in Ruiru.
The Police boss also reported that two vans were torched during the Monday protests to increase the losses incurred by the National Police Service in its mission of managing the Azimio la Umoja protests.
The statement came amid pressure from leaders affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja Coalition who on Tuesday, March 28, demanded answers from security agencies regarding the Northlands and East African Spectre attack.
Speaking at a presser in Naorbi, Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua called out the International Community over what she termed as the "overwhelming silence of our international friends" on the chaos experienced during the protests.
