Pwani University student on Thursday, March 30, recounted seeing the institution bus overtaking on the wrong side at high speed in the Kayole area along Naivasha-Nakuru Highway.

The fourth-year Bachelor of Education student on a different bus stated that they reached out to their colleagues amid confusion but did not get any response.

The volleyball player, among the 120 Pwani University students headed to Eldoret for sports events, revealed that their bus slowed down following the confusion.

After arriving at the accident scene, they only realised that the bus had crashed, killing 18 students along Naivasha-Nakuru Highway.

"I only remember seeing the driver of the ill-fated bus overtaking us on the wrong side at high speed and wondered what could be happening. In the confusion of the moment, our driver slowed down as we started reaching out to our colleagues on the other bus," she narrated.

"When we stopped, we only saw a group of people quickly gathering ahead of us, and we disembarked. We realised that some of our colleagues had perished as the school bus lay by the ditch," she added.

A second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Philosophy survived the accident where the bus hit a matatu.

The 22-year-old footballer, still in shock, stated that his colleagues were full of life before the crash. They were excited to participate in the sports events in Eldoret.

"I didn’t know it would be the end of seeing some of my colleagues who were very jovial a few moments ago,” he stated.

The fatal accident was also captured on a dashcam camera which showed the Pwani University bus in the middle of the road occupying both lanes at full speed, almost colliding with the oncoming private vehicle.

Preliminary reports indicated that the driver lost control of the car, whose brakes had failed, making it collide with a matatu.

By the time of this publication, the National Police Service had not issued a conclusive report on the cause of the accident.
