Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko revealed that he had facilitated the transportation of stranded Pwani University students who survived the grisly accident on March 30.

Sonko stated on Sunday, April 2, that he had been notified that the students were stranded at the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus in Nairobi County.

The former governor gave the students an additional Ksh100,000 for meals and snacks to carry them through their journey to Mombasa.

“I'm happy the survivors of the Pwani University bus accident who were stranded in Nairobi are on their way to Mombasa after my quick intervention.

“I also gave them some pocket money for meals and transport to their final destinations. I wish all the other survivors admitted in various hospitals a quick recovery,” he stated.

In addition, Pwani University student leader stated that the former governor and the president were the only individuals who had intervened in their situation thanking Sonko for his generosity.

The students, who were travelling from Egerton to Kilifi, reached the SGR terminus 10 minutes late on Saturday, April 1, missing their 10:00 pm train.

A section of the students blamed the university for their delay in travelling indicating that the institution knew that the students were meant to travel at exactly 10:00 pm.

“The university came for us late, knowing we had to travel at 10:00 pm. Now the school is saying we should pay for ourselves. We are suffering, "one of the students stated earlier.

They further indicated that they had spent some time at Naivasha hospital to allow some of their colleagues to collect their belonging.

“The school official who accompanied us said that the school had no money and asked us to contribute Ksh1,000 for transport, which would be refunded by the school," another student noted.

The horrific accident occurred when the bus ferrying students for a games championship that was to take place in Eldoret collided with a 14-seater matatu leaving at least 14 people dead.
