On Tuesday, April 4, a video went viral of a young woman who was rescued by neighbours after her husband allegedly tried to push her out through the window of an apartment in Athi River, Machakos County.
A source privy to the matter confirmed the incident to Kenyans.co.ke and stated that the neighbours woke up after screams from the woman rented the air following a fight with her husband.
Rushing to her aid, the neighbours intervened and confronted the man.
A witness who resides in the adjacent block of the apartment claimed that they found the woman dangling from the fifth floor of the apartment.
"Upon hearing her cries, we opened the window curtains and witnessed the scene from the adjacent block where the woman was hanging from the window. My wife and I began shouting, and more residents emerged from their houses to join us.
"We forcefully entered the house and rescued the woman, whose body was hanging out of the window. Her strength had saved her before we arrived, as the man was attempting to throw her from the fifth floor," the witness stated.
The neighbours also accused the husband of stripping his wife before trying to push her through the window - allegations which he denied.
While telling his side of the story, the husband accused his wife of not spending the night at their matrimonial home.
He added that his wife would occasionally brag that she would seek other alternatives for money if he didn't send fare.
"(On Saturday) we were talking and I told her that I didn't have money to send to her so she can use the highway and come straight home. She insulted me and kept stating that other men were willing to pay for her rides.
"I objected to it and on that day she did not come home. She came today (Monday) and did not want to engage in any conversation. As for me, I do not sleep outside so as the wife of the house, how can she do it? And it is not the first time," he defended himself.
"Does it warrant violence in the house?" one of the neighbours posed.
According to the latest survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), gender-based violence topped in Bungoma County with 62 per cent. This was followed by Murang'a and Homa Bay with 53.7 and 53.5 per cent respectively.
