Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Thursday, April 6, addressed security and safety concerns during the Easter Holiday.

Koome assured Kenyans of their safety even as the country gears up for a long weekend, punctuated with celebrations by Christians.

However, the IG warned motorists against flouting traffic rules, noting that police officers will be on high alert.

"We, therefore, appeal to all road users to comply with traffic rules by buckling up, adhering to speed limits, avoiding overloading and reckless driving, driving while texting, and driving un-roadworthy vehicles.

"Due to the ongoing rains, some roads may be flooded and therefore motorists are urged to drive carefully," Koome so ordered.

In particular, Koome warned alcohol partakers against drunk-driving since measures had been put in place to apprehend lawbreakers.

"We wish to further caution the public against overindulgence during this season especially in alcohol, and reiterate that those found driving while intoxicated (under the influence of alcohol and other psychotropic substances) will arrested and dealt with according to the law," Koome explained.

IG Koome also observed that there will be heavy traffic across the country as people drive to and from upcountry.

Motorists are advised to consider exercising patience and caution since the roads are also likely to be wet due to the ongoing rains.

"Accordingly, the National Police Service has put in place elaborate and stringent measures to protect life and property," Koome briefed.

Police also confirmed that they had enhanced patrols and surveillance on highways, commercial and residential areas, social places, and churches to ensure that calmness and tranquility is maintained.

The Inspector General expressed confidence in recording lower traffic accidents during the festive season.

"Based on our statistics, road traffic accidents remain a major cause of injuries and fatalities, with most of the victims being pedestrians, motorcyclists and pillion passengers in accidents largely attributed to preventable human errors," read part of the statement.

Police equally confirmed heightened vigilance around shopping malls, airports, railway and bus stations, places of worship and recreational centres.

"In the spirit of community policing, we call upon members of public, and owners of social places and churches to remain vigilant by increasing their surveillance and screening of their patrons, sharing timely information and reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, law enforcement officer, or through police hotline numbers 999, 112 and #fichuakwadci 0800 722 203," part of the statement read.
