Several motorists were stranded in a snarl-up along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Thursday, April 6, after witnesses rushed to grab wheat shortly after an accident occurred.

A group of looters descended on a lorry that lost control and rammed into another truck along the busy highway.

The individuals reportedly stole sacks of wheat and went as far as to sweep the road to maximise their loot while the driver and police officers watched helplessly, not knowing how best to respond to the broad daylight thuggery.

The driver of the second lorry was transporting long pieces of timber which also got scattered on the highway.

Nakuru - Eldoret Highway became impassible for the better part of the day after the two long vehicles blocked the road.

The situation got worse when looters made it almost impossible for vehicles to navigate their way out of the scene of the accident.

Another accident occurred at the same spot shortly after the looting spree began when a driver of an oncoming truck veered off to avoid hitting the looters.

The driver of the lorry instead hit another vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction on the same highway.

Later, traffic police officers had a hard time clearing wreckage that had covered the busy road, making it completely impassable for several minutes.

The vehicles were, however, removed from the scene of the accident and re-aligned on the road reverse in order to create enough space for motorists to drive through.

Accident scene experts arrived at the scene to record the evidence and process the scene.

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in March 2023, noted that the country had recorded some 9,315 people were seriously injured while 6,691 were slightly injured in various accidents.
