Alcoholic beverages found at the scene of the accident raised questions about the driver's sobriety. However, a survivor came out to defend the deceased driver.

"The bus was designed in such a way that the driver was not allowed to access the party area or vice versa. He was on duty as we hired him to ferry us to the conservancy," he told the media.

Police officers probing the incident revealed that the bus was not licenced to operate on the road and lacked an inspection certificate, deeming it unroadworthy.

Modern Coast Tragedy - 36 Lives Lost

Grief rocked the country on the evening of Sunday, July 25, after a Modern Coast bus full of passengers heading to Mombasa from Meru veered off the Nithi Bridge black spot.

A total of 36 people perished, including all 33 passengers aboard the ill-fated bus. Among those who perished was a graduate doctor reporting for her first job.

First responders on the scene stated that the bus lost control as it went downhill, and knocked off the guard rails before plunging meters below.

Preliminary reports indicated that the bus was speeding, but the wife of the deceased driver vehemently disputed the notion.

“He had been complaining about the state of the bus for a while now. He spent a lot of time at the garage with that bus," Mama Mercy stated.

Modern Coast also insisted that the bus was licensed and approved for the journey. Consequently, the government revoked the license of the bus company.

First respondents indicated that the scene was gory, with some of the bodies of the overloaded matatu sprawled on the road.
