Grief engulfed the Subuiga area along the Isiolo - Meru highway after at least eleven people died following an accident involving a bus, a matatu and a trailer on Saturday, October 8.
Reports indicate that the bus was overtaking another vehicle along a steep road before it collided with an oncoming matatu, and veered 20 metres off the road.
Minutes later, the bus was then hit by a trailer along the highway.
According to police officers who arrived at the scene, eleven people died instantly, including seven people in the matatu.
A witness who was at the scene indicated that police officers from the scene ferried eleven bodies, adding that he was lucky to be alive.
“It was by sheer luck that the bus did not run over me because I was so close. Fortunately, I heard a loud bang and dropped the firewood I was carrying and ducked. The bus hit the matatu and stopped after hitting a trailer,” an eyewitness stated.
The witness added that among the items recovered from the bus were alcoholic beverages.
“The bus' seats had bottles of beer. The passengers appeared to have been partying or heading to a party,” he noted.
The notorious Subuiga junction has claimed lives in the past, raising concern among residents who have called upon the government to take action and prevent further loss of live.
Four people recently died after a truck ferrying fertiliser rammed houses near the same blackspot.
Police indicated that the driver, en route to Isiolo from Mombasa along Meru- Nanyuki highway lost control of the truck and crashed into the buildings.
Buuri police boss David Mwange stated that four people died on the spot while three others were rushed to hospital.
