Gachagua Explains Origin of 'Son of Maumau' & 18-KM Morning Walk With Wife

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Saturday, April 8, explained the origin behind his 'son of maumau' nickname and its connection to the Mt Kenya Forest.

During an early morning walk with his wife -Pastor Dorcas Rigathi - he noted that his parents were Mau Mau fighters and spent time in the forest fighting for independence.

He added that the early morning 18-kilometre walk was meant for reconnection with his past owning to his new role in government.

Gachagua revealed that his parents spent 10 years in the forest alongside other liberators.

"This was a good reconnection for me given that my mother, Martha Gachagua and father, Nashon Gachagua, spent years in this forest fighting for the liberation of this country.

"This forest is a reminder that with blessings and resolve, human beings can achieve their freedom and whatever they desire," he stated.

The DP explained that the country was on its journey for another liberation in which he was participating.

"It, therefore, encourages me even as we go for the second liberation - the economic liberation," the DP stated.

On her part, Pastor Dorcas shared her optimism for the country, and she cited the beauty of nature experienced during the morning walk.

"The sound of the waters and the greenery around is a testimony that God answers prayers," she stated.

Gachagua and the Second Lady took the early morning walk in the company of their sons - Kevin and Keith - even as they engaged with residents.

The Saturday walk came a day after the couple also tracked for 8 kilometres to visit Gachagua's aunty.
