Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Monday, March 6, treated his former high school classmates at a reunion at Harambee House Annex.
The alumni met for the first in 45 years, with Gachagua underlining how the school was significant in his life. It was the institution where he nurtured his leadership skills.
The former classmates shared light moments, with Gachagua recalling how they shared cubicles and performed at the drama club.
Moreover, he owed his success to his high school Principal, Julius Kano Ndumbi, who he explained, moulded and encouraged him to follow his dreams.
“I did not do well in Form Four, but I pleaded with Kano Ndumbi, who disciplined me and enabled me to improve in Form Five.
“From that day in 1982 in Form 5, it has been success after success,” Gachagua narrated.
Moreover, the Deputy President revealed that the alumni would start an initiative to mentor and offer financial support to the students at the school, noting that the institution was still known for its hot and dry nature.
The next reunion scheduled for March 18, according to Gachagua, will include their high school principal and former support staff members.
“We will mobilise all the old boys and teachers to meet at the school to assess the institution's needs and chart how to improve its performance.
“Our no-nonsense Headteacher Julius Kano Ndumbi will be the Chief Guest flanked by all teachers who taught us, and members of the support staff,” Gachagua announced.
Additionally, he stated that most of his classmates struggled to pay school fees, and it was important for them to share their success stories with others.
“We will talk to the students and motivate them. All of us come from ordinary homes. Some wore shoes for the first time in Kianyaga. It is important for us to share our personal experiences to mentor young people to chase success.
“I am very excited to see all of you, and now Kianyaga is on the Kenyan map,” the DP added as he straightened the suit of one of his former classmates.
