President William Ruto on Friday, April 14, presided over the commissioning of the Mavoko Water Supply Project that serves thousands of Machakos residents.

In a statement, State House noted that Mavoko Water Supply Project will be expanded to connect more families even beyond Machakos County.

"The project has connected 20,000 households to clean and safe water benefiting 500,000 residents in Mavoko Township, Athi River, Mlolongo and Syokimau," State House announced.

The Ksh2.7 billion Project is aimed at easing water scarcity in Machakos and other adjacent counties including Makueni and Kajiado.

In the process, the water project will provide direct employment to 300 people, especially the youth in Machakos County.

At the same time, hundreds more are expected to secure employment indirectly so as to help complete its expansion programme.

The project will also see many small and medium enterprises contracted to supply goods and services that will be used by contractors on the site.

It was funded by both Kenya and Belgium governments, and it is expected to form part of the larger plan to provide enough drinking water to residents.

Upon completion, Mavoko Water Supply Project will produce 12,000 cubic metres per day and 360,000 cubic metres in a month.

State House further noted that the project will unlock the potential of the region and lockout unscrupulous vendors from the water business.

Venders are currently selling five-litre jerrican of water at Ksh20 yet they buy the same amount of water at Ksh5 from the kiosks.

Mavoko Water Supply Project is in line with President Ruto's agenda of creating enough capacity to empower Kenyan families with necessary resources such as water for irrigation and domestic use.
