Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Friday, April 14, revealed that a Kenyan had reported a matter to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua concerning a police car caught receiving bribes.

Koome detailed that while Gachagua was headed to Nyeri for the event on alcohol abuse, he (the DP) received a text message with details of a police vehicle collecting bribes on the road.

The DP, as a result, forwarded the matter to the IG who condemned the act terming the bribes as cursed money that will be of no use.

Further, the IG was astonished at the audacity of some police officers who collect bribes on the road and allow unlawful acts to take place.

"The deputy president will tell you that as he was coming here, he received a text with the number plate of a police vehicle receiving bribes on the road. He informed me while I was flying to Nyeri.

"Let me tell you (addressing the officers caught receiving bribes), that will not take you anywhere, that is cursed money," he stated after asking for permission from the DP to get candid.

Koome was speaking during the multi-sectoral meeting where Mt Kenya leaders gathered to discuss the way forward on how to deal with the illicit brew in Central Kenya.

The IG also disclosed that the service was aware of the foreigners in Roysambu Constituency who were selling drugs to the youth.

He, however, did not detail a strategy to deal with the menace in the area where several cases had been reported.

The IG lauded the appointment of Douglas Kanja as the deputy IG. Koome praised Kanja as a disciplined and qualified officer who will see to it that the menace is dealt with.

"I want to assure you that we are committed to this fight, we must win," Koome affirmed.

On his part, Gachagua lamented that illicit brews have demolished the family structure and emphasised a lasting solution that needs to be found.

"We shall not rest until we decisively deal with alcohol and substance abuse to save our youth, to save our family, and bring back our dignity.

"Government officials protecting unscrupulous traders are hereby put on notice. They cannot work for the same Government they are undermining. This will no longer happen," he stated.
