On Friday, April 14, Kisii Governor Simba Arati directed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to investigate an attack at Nduru Hospital in South Mugirango.
Arati issued the demands after a video showed armed goons wreaking havoc at the hospital. They allegedly raided the hospital and pelted vehicles with stones.
The armed individuals also attacked doctors who had gone to the hospital to pick up a machine to perform emergency surgery.
While condemning the attack, Arati alleged that the attack was politically instigated.
"The doctors who were attacked by the goons are still in the hospital. But I want to request the Director of Public Prosecution to probe the case to assure South Mugirango residents of their safety," Arati stated.
Recounting the attack, Odgen Lazarus, a health official in Kisii, stated the doctors were picking a machine to perform surgery when armed individuals waylaid them.
They blocked them from picking the machine, risking the life of another patient who was set to undergo an operation.
"It was just an extra equipment that was being picked to help the doctors save another life. In the process of picking the equipment, suddenly, some goons forced themselves inside the hospital facility," Lazarus stated.
Following the attack, a section of medical practitioners threatened to down tools citing safety concerns. They, however, directed the area law enforcement officers to intervene.
Kisii County Commander confirmed the incident indicating that investigations were in top gear to ascertain what transpired.
"We wish to request our people down there in South Mugirango that this are government assets which they can be shared across the nine constituencies," he appealed to the residents.
