On Saturday, April 15, Kenyans were divided after a garbage collector returned Ksh130,000 mistakenly given to him but only got Ksh1,500 as a reward.

Reportedly, the man from Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County, had been given some boxes, by a lady working at a money shop, to dispose of.

"A lady working at a money and accessories shop in Kahawa Wendani saw him passing with his bag and asked him to carry some wastes boxes she was not using, the young man happily took the boxes and put them inside his bag," Derrick Mbugua narrated the ordeal.

A few minutes later, the lady discovered the money was missing and started to search for the man to get her money back.

She gathered a friend who helped her manoeuvre the streets searching for the garbage collector who seemed to have vanished.

When she found him before he turned in the boxes for recycling, the garbage collector returned the money emptying his pockets to show he hadn't spent a coin.

However, many were rattled by the reward offered for his grand gesture.

"The man needs more reward than this. A job would also be a good reward to help him get his life in order," one suggested.

Many suggest that the lady increase the reward to at least Ksh5,000 since the garbage collector had not even spent the money.

Meanwhile, many faulted the young man for returning the cash, arguing that it was an opportunity for him to change his life.

'The reward was not important, I suggest you take that man to a rehabilitation centre for him to recover for the better," one opined.

On the other hand, some came to the lady's defence, arguing that maybe she was an employee and only offered the reward from her commission.

"For those who claim the reward was not enough, have you operated a money shop before and understood how hard it is to make the Ksh1500?" another posed.

Nonetheless, the garbage collector's act was praised for honesty and trustworthiness even during tough economic times, with the shop lady lauded for her kindness.
