Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary on Sunday, April 16, unveiled advanced preparations the government had put in place to help Kenyans stranded in Sudan.
The CS, while speaking at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos Town, assured the Kenyans in the diaspora that the government was monitoring the situation keenly and that if it worsened, there would be an evacuation exercise.
He further indicated that the state maintained records of Kenyans who were stuck in the war-torn country and estimated them at 3,000.
“I want to assure everyone that we have made arrangements with our national airline in case the situation in Sudan gets out of hand.
“We have a plane on standby for evacuation purposes if the fighting persists,” he explained.
On how many Kenyans were stuck in Sudan, he stated, “We have over 3,000 Kenyans there who are currently hiding in their houses.”
The CS added that the number could be more since the 3,000 figure was of those who registered with its embassy speculating that many more may have failed to register.
“I want to urge all citizens that whenever they go abroad, they should make sure that they register with the Kenyan embassy in that country.
“For example, we have contacted all registered Kenyans in Sudan and we are having trouble locating those who are not registered,” he explained.
Sudan went to war after a paramilitary group tried to overthrow the military-led government.
On Sunday, April 16, President William Ruto made three proposals on how the leadership crisis in Sudan could be solved.
Speaking during a virtual meeting with heads of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Ruto proposed an immediate ceasefire.
He further proposed dialogue between the two warring groups and that regional Presidents send a high-level delegation to Khartoum soon to push for an agreement between the two warring parties.
