Munir Thabit is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Grain Industries Limited (GIL), which produces Umi maize flour and Ajab wheat flour among other brands.

The maize flour was among those listed by the State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Monday, April 17 to be retailing a two-kilogram packet of flour at Ksh159 after intervention from the government.

"Prices have dropped to Ksh159 and Ksh160, depending on the millers. When the President assumed office last year, a 2kg packet was retailing at approximately Ksh230," he stated.

Notably, the manufacturing company began in 2017 barely days after the General Election, and has made impressive strides in five years under Munir's leadership.

In a past interview with Milling and Grain Magazine, Munir disclosed that his vision for the company was greater than the current political tension.

“We had a very clear vision for this project. We wanted to create a mill, which was at par, if not better, in terms of quality, efficiency, and safety with any plant either in Europe or elsewhere," he explained to Milling and Grain Magazine.

In the 5 years, the company has been operational, it has won several awards including the New Business of the Year Award 2017, Best Customer Focus Company 2018, and Best Growth Strategy Company of the Year 2019.

“The completed project has been a huge success, it´s tangible proof that quality suppliers deliver quality results and the return on investment is actually much faster because there are no unforeseen elements to be accounted for," Thabit stated.

Meanwhile, one of the CEO's strategies while launching the company was sending key personnel to Fawema in Germany to gain deeper knowledge about the packing machines.

"We also developed new ideas through being in the foreign factory and interacting with various engineering and technical staff," he explained.

"As I sit in my office and gaze out over the new complex which stands on that once dusty and neglected plot of land, I truly have a great sense of satisfaction that the job has been done well. We are serving our people with quality food products packed efficiently and hygienically and we are immensely proud of it," he concluded.

GIL's vision is to consistently improve the living standards of consumers by providing them with world-class quality products and services for the value of money.

The Mombasa-based company also produces Asli Bakers' Flour, GIL Noodles Flour, and Lotus fortified all-purpose baking flour among others.
