Property of unknown value was destroyed after a fire outbreak Wednesday night at Kabianga University in Belgut,  Kericho County.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established but preliminary investigations indicate there was an electric fault at one of the hostels.

Fire razed down two hostels,  hours after first-year and third-year students reported to the campus.

The university was temporarily closed two weeks ago after students went on a rampage over delayed Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loan disbursement.

The fire broke out at around 9 pm on Wednesday in Hostel Six and Seven which hosts first-year students.

Kabianga Ward Member of County Assembly Dominic Mutai reported that no student was injured during the fire outbreak at the University.

"No student or staff was injured during the fire incident, I appreciate quick moves by the county firefighters," Mutai stated.

Fire brigade teams from Kericho County Government and James Finlays Tea Company arrived at the scene on time and  contained the fire.

Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech condemned the incident, adding that it had taken years and public resources to build the learning institution.

"Kabianga University was built through hardships and a lot of effort from the local community, parents, and the Government and we won't allow it to be destroyed," Koech narrated.

Koech called for thorough investigations into the fire incident and immediate arrest of all persons that were involved.

He further urged university students to remain patient amid the stalemate over HELB funds.

Anthony Manyara, the Kenya University Students Organisation leader, claimed that the president of Kabianga University's Student Governing Council along with 50 other learners were suspended a few days earlier for organizing demonstrations.

"Unknown people torch down Kabianga University buildings after the institution served 50 comrades, including their SGC and President with suspension letters, after they held demonstrations over HELB Delays," read part of Manyara's statement.

He called for the immediate reinstatement of the suspended students in a bid to ease tension and return normalcy at the learning institution.
