A petrol station attendant in Gitaru, Kikuyu, was on Sunday, April 23, injured after a driver ran over her in a bid to evade paying for fuel.

In CCTV footage released by the petrol station, Leah Wambui had just finished cleaning the windscreen, and walked towards the driver's side to confirm payment when he sped off.

The suspect, who was driving a white Toyota Vitz vehicle registered under plate number KCV ***U, had filled his tank with fuel worth Ksh3,300.

Wambui was run over and left sprawling on the floor as her colleagues attempted to chase after the vehicle.

While on the run, the driver narrowly evaded an accident as he hurriedly joined the highway, and was a few seconds away from being hit by a trailer.

The victim filed a report at the Kikuyu Police Station under the complaint 'obtaining credit injury'. The incident happened at 2 am on Sunday.

Whistleblowers demanded the National Police Service (NPS) act swiftly and arrest the victim given that the number plate of the motor vehicle was in the public domain.

They claimed that the same motorist had committed the same offense on April 10, when he fled after consuming fuel worth Ksh3,000 at a petrol station in Sigona.

Kenyans proposed changes to the payment system in fuel stations, amid the spike in cases of motorists speeding off without paying.

"Can't they change the system so that customers pay first before fueling because this has become too much," one user posed.

Meanwhile, a woman who was allegedly assaulted by a driver over her child's behavior in a matatu also filed a police report at the Bungoma Police Station.

The woman claimed that the driver attacked her after her son, who she claimed was autistic, refused to settle in his seat.

"He told me to handle my child, which I tried to, but my child kept on standing. He came and beat him and in the process of defending my child, he slapped me," the woman alleged.

Police have also launched investigations into the matter. The shuttle company is yet to comment on the incident.
