Motorists along the Sachang’wan-Salgaa Road were on Wednesday, April 26, forced to seek alternative routes after a truck blocked the road following an accident.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 7 am when the truck rammed into a barrier dividing the highway.

The truck, which remained suspended after the crash, caused a heavy traffic snarl-up on both sides of the road. It was, however, not clear what caused the crash by the time of publishing.

Motorists Association of Kenya, in a statement, advised motorists on the alternative routes to use on the Nairobi-outbound traffic, which was the most affected.

“For those travelling to Western Kenya from Nairobi through Nakuru … alternative routes that can be used are Njoro-Elburgon-Molo-Mau Summit or Kabarak -Eldama Ravine-Makutano or Kaptagat through to Eldoret,” the association noted.

The body of the trailer that caused the traffic was also damaged and saw its cabin turn to face the opposite direction.

The central barrier that was erected to prevent head-on collisions on the road was also destroyed with debris spilling over to opposite lanes.

The truck was not carrying any containers at the time of the accident.

In an ongoing campaign, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) urged motorists to be cautious when driving, especially, during the current rainy season.

On April 24, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) board sent the Director General(DG) George Njao on 30 days of compulsory leave due to increasing cases of accidents across the country in the past 30 days.

According to a report by NTSA on April 3, Nakuru County had the highest number of motorcyclist and pillion passenger fatalities.

The Sachang’wan-Salgaa stretch has been the bane of drivers with many accidents occurring there leading to public outcry for redesign.

In December 2019, the 14-kilometre stretch was remodeled into a dual-carriageway. This was to curtail the incessant road accidents that had been happening in the area.
