Popular Nairobi matatu fleet, Super Metro, on Tuesday, April 25, announced that it had banned loud music from all its vehicles operating around the city.
In an internal memo, the company further warned of harsh consequences to drivers who would go against the directive.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from the ubiquitous sacco noted that the decision was reached after numerous complaints from its customer base.
“Due to increasing complaints due to loud music in our fleets, any vehicle caught and/or reported to be playing loud music on any of our routes will lead to the bus driver being summoned to answer a disciplinary case.
“Furthermore, the driver must surrender the flash disk upon arrival at the next stage,” the memo read in part.
The company further indicated that the most affected customers were the elderly.
“We acted out of public interest and many of our clients do not appreciate the loud music. Some of our passengers are aged and sick and the loud music negatively affects them,” the management explained its drastic decision.
The source added that going forward, drivers will only be allowed to play controlled music that does not cause discomfort to anyone.
“Loud music contributes to the damaging of the ear and as a company, we want to embrace technology that is environment friendly.
“Controlled music means that every passenger will be able to travel comfortably,” the management explained.
Regarding passengers who prefer loud music while in transit, Super Metro firmly maintained that, “We run a transport business, not the entertainment industry.”
Super Metro is one of the popular matatu Saccos in Nairobi and has attracted a loyal customer base that sees individuals lining up to board their matatu despite the availability of competitors.
On Monday, April 17, the company announced that it was expanding its route to cover Kahawa West.
"Today, we officially commenced our services in Kahawa West. Kindly note that we have more than 100 new fleets that we shall distribute in all our different routes. Our main aim is to serve you our esteemed clients better and better," the company stated back then.
