On Tuesday, May 2, outgoing Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Robert Kibochi oversaw a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) transition before handing over power to his successor, General Francis Ogolla.
According to a statement shared by the Ministry of Defence, the tradition, known as a transitional visit, is highly valued and revered within military units.
A transitional visit is a Kenya Defence Forces tradition whereby every outgoing CDF visits the three services before officially handing over command to the incoming CDF.
The CDF also briefs the units on the ongoing operations, strategic priorities and other issues within the force.
During the transitional visit, Kibochi also bid farewell to the three forces; Kenya Navy, Kenya Airforce and Kenya Army.
"The tradition is critical in the KDF transition as it ensures continuity of leadership and maintains the readiness and effectiveness of the Kenya Defence Forces," KDF stated.
After briefing the incoming commanders led by Ogolla, Kibochi addressed Kenya Navy soldiers. He lauded them for the various milestones they had made in the maritime sector.
He also challenged Ogolla to champion proper housing for military staff while executing his mandate.
"I want to thank the Kenya Navy specifically for your tireless support and efforts in ensuring Maritime Security. I am sure you are working harder to continue achieving Kenya Navy's mission of safeguarding Kenya’s territorial waters.
"You have also performed exemplary well and proven your prowess in Sports in the last three years," Kibochi stated.
After addressing the officers, Kibochi led Ogolla in reviewing the ongoing projects, including the Kenya Navy Ship Shupavu.
On Saturday, April 29, President William Ruto directed Ogolla to ensure stability through diligence, neutrality and strict adherence to the rule of Law.
The Commander-in-Chief also directed Ogolla to maintain KDF's image, which they built through ethical conduct and decision-making over the years.
"It is my expectation that the professional standards of the Kenya Defence Forces will be observed and under your leadership," President Ruto demanded.
