Kenya Railways Suspends Kisumu Safari Train

Kenya Railways on Wednesday, May 3, announced the suspension of the Nakuru-Kisumu Metre Gauge Railways safari train due to harsh weather conditions.

In a statement, the corporation noted that the safari train would not run on Friday, May 5, and Sunday, May 8.

The corporation affirmed that it would communicate once normal services resumed.

"We wish to notify members of the public that due to excessive rains that have affected parts of the Nakuru- Kisumu MGR track, the Kisumu Safari train will not run on Friday, May 5, and Sunday, May 8, 2023.

"We will communicate once normal services resume. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused," the statement read in part.

Earlier, the corporation announced that the commuter train plying the Nairobi CBD-Limuru route, cutting through the Kikuyu Station, would not run due to unavoidable circumstances.

"We wish to notify members of the public that due to unavoidable circumstances, the commuter train that plies Nairobi CBD-Limuru route through Kikuyu Station will not run," read part of the statement.

The Kisumu safari train makes the trip from Nairobi to Kisumu every Friday with stopovers in Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Molo, Elburgon, Fort Ternan, Londiani, Muhoroni, Miwani, Chemelil, Kibigori and Kibos stations to drop and pick passengers.

The train departs at 6:30 pm and arrives the following day in Kisumu at 6:30 am.

The return trip is set for every Sunday with the train departing the Kisumu Railway station at 6:30 pm to arrive in Nairobi at 06:35 am.

A first class ticket to Kisumu cost Ksh2,000 and an economy class ticket costs Ksh600, according to Kenya Railways.
