Several people were feared dead after a fatal accident occurred along the Pala-Homa Hills junction on the Kendu-Homa Bay highway on Friday, May 5.
The school bus reportedly rolled over, injuring several while others died.
Area residents rushed to help rescue the victims as emergency personnel arrived later to ferry them to nearby hospitals for first aid administration.
The bus belonging to ACK GUU Secondary School was reported, to be ferrying around 39 people.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus overturned while trying to avoid a head-on collision with a truck.
Eyewitnesses also reported that some victims were travelling to a funeral event.
From the photos shared widely, the school bus was severely damaged at the front and other parts of the car, including the completely shattered windows.
According to Rachuonyo North sub-county police commander Lydia Parteyie, the bus went off the road before it fell into the nearby ditch.
She added that the rescue operation was ongoing to determine the fatalities.
Data from the National Safety Transport Authority (NTSA) released on March 23 revealed that road fatalities reduced from 1,021 to 974 on March 20, 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.
NTSA detailed that the drop was due to increased public education and awareness through the government road safety mainstreaming program.
Following a series of school bus accidents, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on April 19, directed that no school bus should operate between 10 pm and 5 am.
Furthermore, Murkomen asked all school heads to ensure all seats have functioning seat belts and must be put on at all times.
"Help us restore safety on our roads by reporting incidences of traffic violations through the National Police Service hotline 911," the CS urged the public.
