Several Feared Dead As Tahmeed Bus Overturns on Highway

Four passengers were feared dead and several others injured after a bus belonging to Tahmeed Coach company overturned along the Nakuru- Eldoret highway on Monday, April 17.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from Tahmeed company confirmed the accident noting that they had not yet determined the number of fatalities or injuries.

Witnesses claimed that the bus overturned after heavy rain that was being experienced in the area. 

The bus was on its way to Malindi from Kisumu with 26 passages and three crew members onboard.

According to the driver who escaped with minor injuries, he was trying to avoid colliding with an oncoming lorry when he lost control of the vehicle.

Part of the bus was damaged and windows completely shattered on one side. 

The emergency evacuation team arrived at the scene and rushed the casualties to Molo Hospital for treatment.

On April Saturday, 15, ten people died after a bus lost control and rolled at the Josa area along Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County.

According to a statement from National Police Service (NPS), the bus was ferrying mourners from a funeral when the crash happened. 

Further, the statement explained that upon reaching Josa area, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times before landing into a ditch about 100 metres from the road.

"The accident has claimed ten lives,( nine female and one male, all adults) and 17 people were seriously injured," the NPS statement read in part.

According to the latest report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released on Monday, April 3, 1,070 people had lost their lives in the first three months of 2023.

The number of passenger deaths was attributed to speeding vehicles, crossing at undesignated places, distracted driving or walking and drunk driving.

“According to the latest report, of the 1,072 people killed on our roads, 362 are pedestrians, 302 are motorcyclists, 184 are passengers, 101 are pillion passengers, 104 are drivers while 19 are pedal cyclists,” NTSA stated.
