A survivor of the road accident that claimed ten lives along the Wundanyi-Mwatate road claimed that the driver was too intoxicated to drive.

Speaking at the Moi County Hospital, Taita Taveta County, the aggrieved survivor lamented that the tragedy claimed his three family members, including his two siblings and his in-law.

While recounting the events, he revealed that his two sisters died as he tried to pull them out of the wreckage.

"We were five family members on the trip. My brother at the moment is unable to speak and my two sisters died instantly as I tried to pull them out of the wreckage. My in-law also perished," he stated.

He added that he was fortunate to survive the incident after the bus rolled multiple times leading to some passengers being tossed out through the windows.

"He (the driver) had something to drink and the bend was sharp. We hit the barrier and the bus rolled three times. A number of the passengers were thrown out (of the bus) through the windows," he revealed.

Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime, on the other hand, called for the erection of speed bumps along the stretch - which he noted had turned into a black spot.

"Within a year, three buses have been involved in accidents at the same spot. This issue needs to be looked into," Mwadime told the media during a visit to the hospital.

A report by the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the death toll had risen to 10 while 24 survivors were rushed to Mwatate Sub County and Moi Level 5 hospitals.

Out of these, 17 adults, three children and one infant sustained numerous injuries. The vehicle was also retrieved from the ditch 100 metres from the road for police to conduct more investigations.

The preliminary investigations, according to police, indicated that the bus suffered a brake failure.
