"At the fourth turn, the right-hand side. He tried to revert it on the left and lost control because the vehicle was speeding, causing the bus to roll a number of times," the middle-aged man told the press.

A second passenger who pulled himself out of the wreckage claimed that the driver was under the influence. He added that chances of survival were slim.

"He had something to drink, and the bend was sharp. We hit the barrier and the bus rolled three times, and a number of the passengers were thrown out through the windows," he revealed.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the driver survived the crash but was in critical condition. Officers hope to obtain a statement from him once he recuperates.

The report indicated that the bus had 34 passengers. At least 10 people, nine women, and one man, lost their lives.

Five bodies were positively identified. 24 survivors were rushed to the Mwatate Sub County and Moi Level V hospitals.

17 adults, three children, and one infant sustained serious injuries while one adult suffered minor injuries.

Officers retrieved the vehicle from the ditch 100 meters from the road for processing and investigations. Preliminary investigations pointed to brake failure.

The accident sparked debate on whether those leasing vehicles should source drivers conversant with the routes to reduce the number of accidents.

On April 3, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) which indicated that 1,072 lives had been lost in road accidents between January and March 2023.
