Several passengers were injured after a Modern Coast-branded bus plunged into the Nyakomisaro River in Masosa area, Kisii County.
According to preliminary reports, the bus veered off the road on Wednesday, December 28, before plunging into the river.
Confirming the accident, Kisii Central police boss Amos Ambasa stated that one person had succumbed while those injured were rushed to local hospitals within the area for emergency attention.
Locals and police officers also rushed to the scene to help with the rescue operation.
Preliminary reports also indicated that the bus was headed to Tanzania from Mombasa when it lost control and plunged into the river in Kisii county.
By the time of this publication, the cause of the accident was not immediately established.
Nyakomisaro River accident came just months after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revoked the license of the Modern Coast bus service following the Nithi Bridge accident that claimed over 33 lives.
NTSA grounded the company's fleet of 31 buses plying different routes due to the crash.
"A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator's safety operational standards is currently underway," NTSA's statement read in part.
"We condole with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragic crash and wish quick recovery to those undergoing treatment," the road safety authority added.
Preliminary reports indicated that the bus lost brakes, hitting an oncoming vehicle before plunging 40 feet into the river below.
However, it is unclear whether NTSA allowed the company back into the road or whether the license revocation affected the Kisii route.
