Residents of the Marigat region in Baringo are living in perpetual fear after an armed gang went rogue and started robbing the community.

In a CCTV footage shared on Sunday, May 7, the thugs were seen opening fire on shoppers who were inside Marigat Supermarket and robbing them at dusk.

In the footage, the robbers could be seen shooting indiscriminately as shoppers scampered to safety.

The robbers also accosted the cashier and took away the supermarket’s earnings for the day in just a few minutes.

After robbing the supermarket, the two-member gang shot in the air as a warning and slithered into darkness.

Speaking to the press, the area's residents indicated the case was not an isolated incident revealing that the thieves had terrorised the region for over a month.

“We are on a self-imposed curfew where we have to close our shops early for the fear of our lives,” one of the residents lamented

A mobile money shop attendant, who also talked to the press, remarked that she had lost Ksh70,000 thugs wreaking havoc in the area.

“They robbed me at gunpoint and even after I gave them all the money I had, they went ahead to shoot in the air destroying my roof,” she stated.

Mochongoi Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kipruto Kimosop, however, faulted the national government for not curbing insecurity in the region.

“What kind of a situation is this? We have an entire sub-county security committee but attacks happen in more than five centres and nothing has been done,” the MCA complained.

The allegations of laxity from the national government were refuted by Baringo Police Commander Julius Kiragu.

“We already have suspects on our radar after getting information from the public and it is only a matter of time before we make an arrest,” he assured the public.
