A 19-year-old Form, Two student at Rang'ala Girls in Kisumu County, was allegedly shot dead after police officers opened fire in an altercation with Jua Kali workers.

Police officers were reportedly chasing after a defiant matatu driver who sped past a roadblock into the Juakali area.

Reports stated that the girl was returning to school in the morning when caught in the chaos.

Eyewitnesses claimed she was heading home on a motorbike before stray bullets hit her and the rider.

Residents rushed her to the nearby hospital for treatment on board a Tuk-Tuk, but she was reported dead on arrival.

After viewing her lifeless body at the hospital, her mother was overwhelmed with emotions.

Three men, reportedly left nursing wounds, were rushed to the hospital for emergency care.

Eyewitnesses argued that police officers were shooting aimlessly, leading to the death of the young girl and the injury of three members of the public.

Following the shootout, residents marched to the Central Police Station, pelting stones and other objects and pushing the officers to admit causing the girl's death. To avert the crisis, police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

A section of the rowdy crowd also attempted to loot nearby supermarkets and shops before officers intervened.

"There are many ways of apprehending a matatu when it is on the wrong. That is why we have institutions like NTSA," one resident argued.

According to the police, two officers had recorded their statements in relation to the incident.
