Residents in Kisumu City went on a rampage on Tuesday, May 9, after police officers reportedly opened fire after a matatu bypassed a roadblock.

Reports indicated that three individuals sustained injuries from the shooting, with unverified claims alleging that a woman died in the scuffle.

As a result, the protesters drawn from the Kamas area demonstrated, blocking several roads and leading to a snarl-up.

The residents demanded the Central Police Station in Kisumu denounce the shooting and hold its officers accountable.

The rowdy youth and traders are said to have vandalised properties when they stormed the police station along Uhuru Road in the Southern part of the City.

The deceased was reportedly shot while aboard a motorcycle when the police fired a few rounds in the air to disperse crowds.

Two others who were injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were receiving treatment while in critical condition.

Police were yet to issue a report on the allegations by the time of publishing this article.

The protest came a month after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki transferred Chuka Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and the County Commander over the shooting of Willis Kiraku Mugambi, the Tharaka Nithi County Bodaboda Association chairman.

The region's commander, Rono Bunei, further confirmed that his office was pursuing justice against the officer who was already behind bars.

"That police officer who shot the chairman, as I leave here, he will be behind bars.

"Someone from Eldoret is coming to be a County Commander here. I have also brought in another OCS," confirmed Bunei at the time.
