Former Nairobi governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Tuesday, May 9, vowed to support a student whose uniform was torn, forcing her teacher to mend it inside a classroom.
In a statement, Sonko pledged to clear her pending school fees, buy her five pairs of uniforms and support the family with a six-month shopping.
"I just want to buy her five sets of school uniforms, rubber shoes, official school shoes, her food and school shopping for at least six months and clear any of her outstanding school fees," Sonko's statement read in part.
He, however, appealed to Kenyans to help him track the student, who he indicated was at a school in Narok.
Teacher's Story
Sonko responded after the undated photo of the teacher mending the student's uniform went viral. The student was photographed covered in a white sheet.
Preliminary reports indicated that the teacher was based at a school in Narok County, where she has served for over 34 years.
Due to the economic crunch, the teacher reportedly resolved to use her position to support students in the region. Multiple reports indicated that it was her way of motivating students to embrace education despite many challenges.
Several advocacy groups called for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recognise her efforts.
"This good act has is a lesson. Our work as teachers is not just to teach and go home. We are mentors, parents, role models, nurses, first aiders and inspiration to our learners.
"Kudos to all teachers. And may TSC promote her instantly," one social media user indicated.
By the time of this publication, TSC had not confirmed the teacher's working station nor the clamour for her promotion.
