Police on Thursday, May 11, detained Eliud Wekesa, popularly known as Yesu wa Tongaren, hours after grilling him at Bungoma Divisional Police Headquarters.
Yesu wa Tongaren was set to be arraigned with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations seeking court orders to hold him for more days.
The DCI officers questioned him over his doctrine, indoctrinating the faithful, and other allegations the deacon rejected.
Police added that they were set to forward his file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to be advised on the way forward.
"I honoured the summon after the OCS stated that the county commander wanted to hold more talks with me," Yesu wa Tongaren explained after appearing before the police on Thursday, May 11.
According to Wekesa, he convinced the police that children under his ministry attend school and are treated in hospitals as required by the law.
"The other question was about children being treated at hospitals, and it was ascertained that they do. Doctors treat, and God heals. I cannot oppose those given power by God, to treat.
"Police have not harassed me. Some say that I was arrested, but all those are false allegations," he added, explaining that he presented himself at the station for grilling.
On whether his church was registered, the self-proclaimed Messiah explained that the process was underway.
It remains to be seen if Yesu wa Tongaren will hire a Lawyer to defend him against a legal onslaught over his religious beliefs. On Wednesday, May 10, he argued that he would call upon the forces of nature.
"My lawyers will be the sun and the moon since I have wronged no man. And when I say sun, it's a parable. I shall leave it to you to understand it yourselves," he stated.
The New Jerusalem Church leader reiterated that he was innocent and was a man of God who does not tolerate crime.
On Thursday, May 4, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale urged police in Bungoma to investigate pastors accused of misleading the faithful in Western Kenya.
“If Yesu of Tongaren is the problem, come for him. If you are coming for Yesu of Tongaren, this is the time.
"How can somebody who stands at a marketplace, for two three, four months, receiving offerings, ends up buying a vehicle, opens a church and a TV station. This must stop,” Khalwale argued.
