The majority of students who scored C+ and above in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam will have to fully or partially fund their university education.

This was after the government announced that it had only enough funds to sponsor 45,000 out of 173,000 qualified students.

Some courses are charged exorbitantly and Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of institutions charging over Ksh500,000 per year in fees for one to pursue some of the degree courses.

The University of Nairobi has two-degree courses that will cost students over Ksh500,000.

Moi University and UoN are the only institutions approved by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to offer Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Other public universities charging over Ksh500,000 for degree courses include Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University.

At JKUAT, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery will cost Ksh612,000 with a similar amount charged to students joining Kenyatta University.

Although not at the half-a-million mark, students who apply for a Bachelor of Pharmacy at JKUAT will be required to pay Ksh492,660.

According to KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), universities cannot revise their fee for a period of four years.
