Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Ezekiel Machogu, on Wednesday, May 17, directed students who sat the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to start applying for tertiary courses.
Depending on their KCSE mean grade, students can apply for undergraduate degree programs, diplomas, certificates and artisan courses.
Those willing to pursue diploma courses are required to have a minimum grade of C- (minus) except for a diploma in education which requires C+ (plus) mean grade.
Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of the five most marketable courses and some of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) accredited institutions offering them. Unless stated otherwise, the fee for diploma courses is Ksh67,189 per year.
Diploma in Education
Diploma in Education is offered in universities, teacher’s training colleges and Technical and Vocational and Education Training (TVET).
Students who pursue the course can apply for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) number and teach in secondary schools.
Notable institutions offering them include; Kagumo Teachers Training College, Lugari Diploma Teachers Training College, Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College and Masinga Technical and Vocational College.
Diploma in Catering and Accommodation Management.
This course is for students seeking to work in the hospitality industry.
The course takes two years, with two semesters each year.
You must have scored at least C- (minus) in your KCSE exam to apply for this course.
Colleges offering them include; Baringo Technical College, Coast Institute of Technology, Eldoret Polytechnic, Kabete National Polytechnic and Kisumu Polytechnic.
Diploma in Electrical Engineering
This is one of Kenya's most marketable diploma courses since graduates can engage in self-employment.
Some of the KUCCPS-accredited courses that offer a Diploma in Electrical Engineering include; Bondo Technical Training Institute, Butere Technical and Vocational College, Coast Institute of Technology, Eldoret Polytechnic, Kabete National Polytechnic and Kenya Coast Polytechnic.
Certificate in Journalism and Mass Media
Those who missed on C+ university entry minimum grade and want to pursue a career in journalism can apply for a certificate in Journalism and Mass Media as long as they scored a minimum of C- (minus).
KUCCPS-approved courses offering them include; Masinga Technical and Vocational College, Michuki Technical Training Institute, Molo Technical and Vocational College, and Sigalagala National Polytechnic.
Diploma in Information Communication Technology
Only two KUCCPS-approved institutions are offering DICT for students who want to apply for government scholarships.
Students can apply to other colleges if willing to take the course under a self-sponsored program.
Institutions offering DICT are; Borabu Technical and Vocational College and Meru University of Science and Technology.
