The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Sunday, May 28, listed four major corruption cases scheduled for mentioning or hearing in the week of Monday, May 29.

At the top of the list was former Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s graft case set for mention on Wednesday, May 31.

Obado was charged with abuse of office, conspiracy to commit an economic crime, money laundering and unlawful acquisition of public property.

He was also accused of misappropriating amounts estimated at Ksh73 million during his tenure as the county boss.

“Allegations relate to misappropriation of public funds belonging to the county by the former governor together with his children amounting to Ksh73.4 million,” EACC noted.

The governor, together with 10 others, was arrested on August 2020 after the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions(ODPP) accused them of using 13 companies to siphon money from Migori County government.

Among those arrested were four of the governor's children believed to have received payments from companies that traded with the County Government of Migori between 2013 and 2017.

A former Government employee will also have a date with the law after he reportedly amassed Ksh615 million in unexplained wealth.

The employee, who was charged alongside his wife, was accused of accumulating extensive wealth despite having only earned Ksh45 million in salaries and bonuses from tea farming over the period he worked in the public service.

On Friday, June 2, at Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, there will be a hearing of a graft case involving Mohammed Swazuri, former Chairperson of the National Lands Commission (NLC).

Swazuri, during his tenure as NLC chairperson, was accused of embezzling public funds to the tune of Ksh221 million.

“Swazuri is charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property.

“Allegations relate to fraud, which caused a loss of public funds belonging to Kenya Railways Corporation in the sum of Ksh221 million,” EACC stated.

The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court will also hear a case concerning a fraudulent tendering process on Wednesday, May 31.

“The mention will be of a recovery suit following allegations of irregular, fraudulent procurement at the State Department of Correctional Services between 2016 to 2018,” the anti-graft agency revealed.

In the case, a private company was allegedly paid Ksh4.7 million on account of goods comprising of foodstuffs that were never supplied to prison facilities.

EACC’s new boss Bishop David Oginde, during his swearing-in on Tuesday, May 9, revealed that the agency would prioritise recovery of corruption proceedings.

"I will be seeking support in strengthening the legal framework for the effective fight against corruption and recovery of corruptly acquired assets," he described his mission at the helm.
