Four people were reported dead, while others sustained severe injuries after a high-speed chase with the police in Kimilili, Bungoma, on Wednesday, June 7.
Police were said to have been chasing after illicit brew traders in the county when the accident occurred.
According to the residents, three died instantly while one succumbed to injuries at the Chwele District hospital.
Following the accident, the locals blocked the road with stones hindering traffic for several hours as they demonstrated against police harassment.
Police arrived at the scene to disperse the rowdy crowd, but were overpowered, forcing them to retreat.
"The officer who led to the accident has been here for almost six years. We ask the OCPD to call for his transfer," another resident stated.
Residents also called upon the authorities to ensure the officer was apprehended and charged.
"This is not fair, the police should have a proper channel of arresting suspect," a resident stated.
They thus urged police officers to conduct themselves professionally to protect the residents and ensure sanity is restored.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua launched a nationwide campaign against illicit brew destroying the youth.
On Monday, May 29, the DP toured Nakuru County and discussed several measures to curb illicit brew in the country.
"We will review the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2010, and regulations to provide a formula for determining the maximum number of alcoholic outlets in a given area," Gachagua stated.
The team also crafted a monitoring system to track progress for better intervention.
