Members of the Siaya County Assembly, on Thursday, June 8, impeached Deputy Governor William Oduol after hours-long deliberations.
The DG was sent home after 42 MCAs approved a committee report which accused him of abusing office and violating the Constitution.
In the findings tabled before the county assembly on May 29, Oduol was accused of splashing Ksh1 million on his office chair, among other expenditures.
he reportedly directed that his office be renovated and all furniture replaced immediately after he assumed the role.
In total, the report, which branded him a dishonest man, indicated that Ksh11 million of taxpayers' money was poured into the project.
The special committee also accused him of forcing junior employees, mostly in the procurement departments, to award tenders to specific individuals.
The impeachment came barely two weeks after he was officially kicked out of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in which his boss, James Orengo, has been a life member.
ODM's top organ claimed that Oduol had scuttled the Governor's progress by working with the ruling Kenyan Kwanza Coalition.
“The Siaya ODM committee has unanimously resolved that William Oduol be compelled to resign as the DG since he no longer subscribes to the ideals and aspirations of the party.
“This meeting also resolved he be expelled and his ODM membership is hereby revoked,” read a statement from ODM at the time.
What Next
Siaya County Assembly speaker is then expected to inform Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, in writing, about the impeachment motion within a period of two days.
Kingi will then constitute a Senate meeting to hear the charges leveled against Oduol and form a committee to go on a fact-finding mission.
The committee presents the findings to the Senate in a span of 10 days and calls the DG to defend himself. If the proof against the allegations is found, the Senate will vote to impeach him. If a majority votes to impeach him, Oduol ceases holding office immediately.
