Former Westlands Parliamentary aspirant Nelson Havi on Monday, June 12, dissociated himself from reports that he was seeking appointment as the next Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The lawyer, who was appointed by President William Ruto as Chairman of the Retirements Benefits Authority (RBA), indicated that he was comfortable with the position.

He further took offence with a local newspaper that claimed he was actively lobbying for the DPP position.

“The DPP is appointed from interviewed candidates. I am not lobbying for the appointment and will not respond to the call for applications when it is made,” he stated adding that he would not be a candidate in the interviews.

Havi remarked that the newspaper publication made the assertions without seeking his comment.

On why he was not applying for the position, he explained, “I am diligently offering legal services through my firm and have no intention of exiting private legal practice.”

The veteran lawyer further refuted claims of feeling shortchanged by Ruto noting that he appreciated the RBA chairperson.

“I continue to serve the public in my capacity as RBA chairman with dignity and honour,” he stated.

The publication alleged that Havi had grudgingly accepted the RBA post which he dismissed as hearsay.

The DPP position is likely to fall vacant when the office's occupant Noordin Haji is confirmed as the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

On Tuesday, May 16, Ruto nominated Haji for the position. The outgoing DPP was subsequently vetted in Parliament and is awaiting confirmation.

Before joining ODPP, Haji had served as Deputy Director of the Counter Organised Crime Unit at NIS.
