Dennis Nyamwembe, on Monday, June 19, narrowly escaped lynching from an angry mob that trailed him following an earlier accident along the Kisii-Nyamira road.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the motorist noted that the boda boda riders burned his car to avenge their counterpart who was knocked down by the motorist.

According to Nyamwembe, the accident was a result of a misunderstanding after he knocked down the rider while trying to make a turn.

Following the incident, a group of boda-boda riders chased him down the road and tried to block his path.

"We could have solved the situation with the boda boda rider in question but at the time, the other riders had come up and were protesting," he stated.

Fearing for his life, Nyamwembe parked his car on the side of the road and escaped on foot while the angry mob burned down the grey Toyota Belta to ashes.

He reported the matter to Kisii Police Station and urged detectives to expedite investigations.

According to the police report, the 20-year-old boda boda rider was knocked down while carrying a pillion passenger. The two sustained fractures on their legs and were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

"The efforts by police officers and good samaritans to put off the fire were in vain. Arrangements are being made to tow the vehicle to the station for further police action," the police report read in part.

The latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that the number of boda-boda rider fatalities decreased from 289 in 2022 to 265 in 2023.

At the same time, pedestrian fatalities reduced from 359 to 330 and pillion passenger fatalities also dropped from 109 to 93 in the first five months of 2023. In general, the total number of fatalities decreased from 1,021 to 974 in 2023.

The Authority urged motorists to adhere to the traffic laws to avoid further fatalities.
