Several people were feared dead, as others suffered critical injuries in a grisly road accident involving two trailers on Saturday, June 24.

The accident involving two trailers along the Molo-Kibunja highway in Nakuru Couty occurred a few minutes past 1 pm.

Eyewitnesses accused one of the trailer drivers of veering off the road into the other lane with oncoming traffic.

Emergency service providers rushed to the scene to assess the victims' conditions, administer first aid and stabilize their injuries before they were rushed to nearby hospitals for admission.

The number of deaths and injuries was yet to be disclosed by the time of publishing this article.

Motorists were temporarily affected by the traffic snarl-up that partially blocked the road as traffic marshalls worked to restore sanity.

Some drivers were caught overlapping, causing more havoc and hampering movement at the accident scene.

Traffic marshalls and area residents called upon motorists to follow the traffic rules, specifically the markings and signs on the road that guide drivers.

"Some truck drivers overtake despite the presence of the continuous yellow lines, especially when driving behind small vehicles. They bully these vehicles out of the roads," one remarked.

In 2018, the government planned to redesign the 14-kilometre stretch after an uproar from the boda-boda riders and other motorists. The road users warned that the area was slowly turning into a black spot.

The Molo accident occurred a day after a Kenyan bus en route to Rwanda was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz in Uganda.

Three deaths were reported in the accident, reportedly caused by reckless driving.

Data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that 1,700 deaths were reported between January and May 2023.

Following increased road accidents, NTSA ordered mandatory retesting of drivers who were found flouting traffic laws and seized unroadworthy vehicles in a nationwide crackdown.

“The re-test process involves administration of both written theory exam and oral submissions. The questions are drawn from the content provided in the Curriculum for driver training and testing," NTSA announced.
