Kenya lost four gallant Kenya Defence Soldiers on Tuesday, June 26, after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a grisly accident along Marsabit- Isiolo Highway.

Reports indicated that the Landcruiser vehicle lost control and rolled several times near the Karare region along the stretch.

Three KDF officers died on the spot while another soldier lost his life while receiving treatment at Marsabit Referral Hospital.

Six other officers sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment with three reported to be in critical condition.

Karare residents quickly rushed to the scene of accident to help the KDF soldiers who had survived the accident.

Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed KDF officers at the waiting area of Marsabit County Referal Hospital as they waited for news concerning their injured colleagues.

The accident happened nine days after 10 General Service Unit (GSU) were seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling on ran over an Improvised Explosive Device in troubled Lamu County. 

On Tuesday, June 13, the country lost 8 KDF soldiers after a Landcruiser they were driving on ran over an IED in Ijara, Garissa County.

It was not immediately clear if the KDF Landcruiser involved in an accident on Marsabit-Isiolo Highway had run over an IED in the region that is characterised by banditry attacks.

The accident happened a few hours after another vehicle carrying civilians lost country and veered off the road before bursting into flames on the Embu-Meru highway.

NTSA statistics

Between January 1, and May 18, a total of 1,679 people lost their lives in road accidents according to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

According to NTSA, people who were seriously injured during that period were 3,620 and those slightly injured were 2,690 with the authority noting most of the accidents were avoidable.
