Nakuru County Government on Tuesday, July 4, detailed that electricity poles erected in the middle of a newly constructed road will be removed.

A statement by the Governor Susan Kihika-led administration indicated that Kenya Power had been contacted and assured that the removal of the poles was underway.

The county administration explained that the road constructed around the Free Area Estate was new with delays experienced in the relocation of the poles.

The contractor also left space by the side of the road to allow for the relocation of the poles.

"While inspecting the project, Nakuru County Resident Engineer Symon addressed concerns raised by area residents on electric power poles that are in the middle of the newly constructed road.

"To address this, the contractor has left a strip of two meters wide to allow Kenya Power space to relocate the power lines," read the statement in part.

Further, Kihika's government added that the contractor would fill up the holes left after the removal of the poles to guarantee safety for motorists.

"And to ensure the safety of the pedestrians, the road will be clearly marked with speed bumps erected at intervals of 50 meters to control speeding motorists along the stretch of the loop road," the county government added.

The statement by the county government came after a social media uproar with many fearing the hazard the poles posed to motorists

At first, Kenyans thought the poles had been erected in Nairobi. However, it was quickly established that the incident took place in Nakuru.

"Nothing justifies the road with the power poles on it! This is a disaster in the making. KPLC are just opposite your offices or call the Nairobi offices. I hope the road is not open for use," Duke Albert stated

"Allowing a high voltage cable to be in the middle of a carriageway is madness. The first critical task upon take over of the site should have been the relocation of utility infrastructure," another concerned user lamented.
