Two people died in a road accident along the Bomet-Narok Highway on the night of Saturday, July 8, after a Toyota Probox veered off the road and landed into a ditch.

Confirming the incident, Bomet East Sub-county Police commander John Karani pointed out that the driver of the Probox lost control of the vehicle before veering off the road.

The driver, who was heading towards Bomet from Narok, died on the spot while three passengers survived the ordeal with dire injuries. They were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.

One died while receiving treatment in hospital.

"There were five occupants aboard. We are investigating what exactly transpired before the unfortunate incident happened," Karani told the press.

Several bystanders rushed to the scene in a bid to assist the trapped survivors. The commotion caused a traffic snarl-up along the highway which lasted for almost three hours.

Police officers, who were dispatched to the scene, managed to restore order and traffic flow.

The wrecked car was towed to Longisa police station as detectives commenced investigations to establish what transpired.

NTSA Stats

The latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 2,124 fatalities between January 1, 2023, to June 25, 2023. This was a decrease compared to the 2,261 people recorded during the same time the previous year.

Pedestrians recorded the highest number of fatalities (729) followed by motorcyclists at 561, passengers (403), pillion passengers (196), drivers (189) and pedal cyclists (46).

To curb the menace, NTSA rolled out a sensitisation campaign to urge road users to adhere to traffic laws.

Themed The Fatal Six, the campaign focuses on creating awareness of key factors including speeding, lane indiscipline, distracted driving, drunk driving, failure to wear a helmet as well as failure to use available pedestrian walks.
