Motorists plying Thika Road were stuck in traffic for over three hours following an accident involving a long-distance bus around the Githurai Car Wash area.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred minutes after 6 am and involved a bus, other personal vehicles and a motorcycle.

The bus was en route to Garissa when it hit the other vehicles. The cause of the accident was, however, yet to be established.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Brian Marangu, a motorist who was at the accident scene, indicated that rescue operations were underway with over three ambulances rushing injured passengers to the hospital.

"We stayed on the road for quite some time because of the accident. I saw three ambulances transporting some of the victims to the hospital," he stated.

Traffic police were immediately deployed to the accident scene to help in the evacuations and restore the flow of traffic to normalcy.

Meanwhile, motorists intending to use the road were advised to use alternative routes as the authorities worked to restore order on the highway.

Motorists were also encouraged to observe lane discipline and traffic rules to reduce the number of accidents which, according to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data, were on the increase.

"Heavy traffic jam along Thika Road from Roysambu heading to Thika and Githurai to Town. There is an accident involving a bus near Kastemil on the highway. Police and ambulances are on site. Motorists advised to use service lanes," Geoffrey Wageni, a witness, stated.

The Githurai accident happened hours after 45 people lost their lives in another accident in Londiani Junction in Kericho County.

A trailer reportedly lost control on Friday, June 30, at around 6:30 pm and rammed into seven vehicles before running over a number of pedestrians.

Some 2,124 Kenyans had lost their lives in road carnages as of Thursday, June 29, 2023 according to statistics from the NTSA.

Majority of those affected were pedestrians who recorded the highest number of casualties at 729.
