United Nations Picks Ex-Nation Journalist for Top Role

Former Nation Media Group producer Sandra Macharia was appointed as Director of the United Nations Information Service by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In a statement on Monday, July 10, the UN boss announced that Macharia's new role would include circulating global UN messages to people in three countries; Kenya, Uganda and Seychelles.

Macharia has over 20 years of experience in international development, communications and media strategies as well as reputation risk and crisis management.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she is well adept at working with technical experts to package information in a compelling, user-centered manner.

"I understand complex concepts, connect ideas across different sectors/organisational parts for results, solid strategist and problem-solver, results-oriented consensus-builder and have the ability to work vertically and horizontally to achieve goals," read part of her profile.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting from the University of Wales, Cardiff in 2000 and pursued a postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism. 

She also holds a master's degree in media, peace and conflict studies from the Universidad para la Paz in Costa Rica.

Prior to the United Nations, Macharia worked as a broadcast journalist, radio producer and news anchor at Nation Media Group for a year. 

She has also worked as a producer, reporter and news anchor for various news outlets including Reuters, BBC World Service and Standard Group Plc.

Macharia joins a list of decorated journalists who have shifted to the United Nations. Kenyan journalist and member of the Kenya Editors Guild, Denise Kodhe was on February 23, 2023, appointed as a member of the Africa Human Security Index (AHSI) Advisory Group - a program under the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Kodhe was tasked with promoting socioeconomic development, and good governance in the implementation and monitoring of Agenda 2063 to achieve the program's goals.
