The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on Tuesday, July 11, called out the Kenyan media outlets over the coverage of the death of Ruai Catholic priest Joseph Kariuki who died on Saturday, July 8, at a lodging in Murang'a County.

In a statement signed by CEO David Omwoyo, the media watchdog termed part of the media coverage as unprofessional, insensitive and against the code of conduct.

The watchdog particularly faulted the language used in various media reports.

Omwoyo explained that the council's statement followed an analysis of the coverage in mainstream media and social media outlets. The story went viral on Sunday and dominated conversation for the better part of Monday.

"The use of sensational words and derogatory terms was insensitive and uncalled for, violating the dignity of the subjects involved, and resulting in invasion of the individual's privacy," Omwoyo remarked.

"A review of the media coverage shows inconsistencies in reporting facts of the story, sensational headlines, and breaches of the code of conduct on accuracy & fairness, integrity, accountability, obscenity, taste, and tone."

Further, the council directed media houses to ensure balanced reporting and respect the privacy of those in grief.

"In cases involving personal grief and shock, inquiries shall be made with sensitivity and discretion. Journalists shall present news with integrity, and common decency and respect the dignity of the audience as well as the subject of the news," he advised.

"The Council advises that as the media continues to cover the story, caution must be taken to protect the dignity of individuals involved and adherence to expected professional practices at all times."

According to a police report, the Ruai-based clergyman became unconscious at a lodging in Murang'a County on Saturday, July 8. At the time, he had a female guest who raised the alarm about his health.

"They rushed him to Kenol Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival while still aboard his motor vehicle Toyota Harrier black in colour," read the report in part.
