Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau was arrested on Thursday, July 13, over his alleged involvement in Wednesday's protests.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on phone, the legislator confirmed that police picked him up from his Karen home at 4:00 am and took him to Nairobi Area Traffic Police Headquarters near the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Mlolongo, which falls under Mavoko Constituency, witnessed intense protests following a new wave of anti-government demos against the rising cost of living.
"I am not doing well this morning. They took me from my home at 4:00 am and up to now they have not told me what I did wrong," the MP told Kenyans.co.ke.
The arrest of the second-term Wiper Party MP come just hours after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki gave a stern warning, threatening to deal firmly with the organisers and financiers of Wednesday's protests.
Makau is the first leader to be arrested following the new wave of protests that have threatened to cripple the country's struggling economy.
Leaders allied to the government have indicated that the Azimio-led coalition should be held responsible for the chaos witnessed across the country.
Weighing in on the matter, Trade CS Moses Kuria accused MP Makau, without providing evidence, of orchestrating the protests in Mlolongo because of the government's decision to evict illegal squatters from East Africa Portland land in Athi River.
The CS added that they would go ahead with the plan despite the protests, stating that the land has been reserved for the construction of the first Kenyan cargo airport.
During the protests, demonstrators blocked part of the Nairobi Expressway and vandalised the barrier, bringing operations to a standstill.
Motorists were forced to use alternative routes as the protestors pelted vehicles with stones.
Protestors engaged police in running battles leading to destruction.
